Cold weather changes how your body handles hydration, and most trampers don't notice until they're already behind on fluids. When the temperature drops, your thirst response drops with it. You're sweating less, so the usual cues that tell you to drink go quiet, even though your body is still losing water through breath and effort. Add altitude, wind chill, and the extra layers you're wearing, and it's easy to finish a winter tramp more dehydrated than you'd ever be in summer.
Then there's the practical problem. Anyone who's tramped through the Tararuas or the Kaimais in July knows what happens to a hydration reservoir left exposed to the cold. The hose freezes first, usually right at the bite valve, and within an hour, you've got a full reservoir and no way to drink from it.
Why reservoirs freeze first at the hose
Water in a wide reservoir holds enough volume to retain heat for a while, especially if it's tucked inside your pack. The hose is a different story. It's thin, exposed, and often sits against the outside of your pack strap where wind can get at it directly. That's your weak point.
How to keep water moving in the cold
